Campus disruptions
Currently, there are several improvement works taking place across our campuses and around Salford, which can cause disruptions from time to time. To help prepare your journey to campus, we've listed the current and upcoming works and how this might impact your travel and experience on campus. Below you can find:

Current works around campus
High voltage and fibre installation
High voltage/fibre installation is currently taking place across Peel Park campus. The work will increase our electrical capacity and support our transition to net zero carbon by 2038. From 15 to 26 October there will be some disruption around Peel Building and Cockcroft, with the closure of a few car parking spaces. On Saturday 26 October the road behind Peel Building will be closed between 07:00-14:00.
Pathways repairs around The Old Fire Station
From Monday 12 August 2024, work will commence to repair the uneven pedestrian pathway surfaces across Albion Place (the area behind the Salford Cenotaph), including routes to and from The Old Fire Station Bakery and Brewery.
Works are expected to take between six to eight weeks to complete (depending on the weather) and the areas being repaired will be cordoned off for this time. Alternative routes should be used if possible during the period of the work, and all other pedestrian routes will remain open for use with care.
Car parking improvements
We're continuing to look at how we can improve car parking on campus. We've been installing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in all car parks to help us understand usage, looking at how technology can identify vacant parking spaces and the exploration of interim parking areas on and around campus. Travel and connectivity to and from the university in general is under review, and we will update you in due course.
Following the news that we have received planning permission for our new Health Building, preparations are now underway for works to begin on site. As a result, there will be a loss of car parking space outside the Mary Seacole building. However, we have been busy identifying alternative parking across campus. Although we are still awaiting a confirmed date for the closure of Mary Seacole car park, we do have additional car parking space at our North of England Robotics Innovation Centre (NERIC). Students and staff can find more information about this, including a video guide, on the Student Hub and Staff Hub.
Also, if you drive to campus, please respect our local residents and avoid parking on driveways and side streets. We have parking spaces on campus, including 90 designated for disabled parking.
New Buildings
Health Building
Our Frederick Road campus is being developed to expand our in-house clinics, to support your learning and experience and to support our wider community’s health needs. We've recently received planning permission of our new Health Building. Work will begin in late November 2024 and the target completion date is Autumn 2026.
Greater Manchester Insititute of Technology (GMIoT) Building
We received planning permission for Greater Manchester Insititute of Technology (GMIoT) Building on Peel Park campus across from University House. Construction has begun, including piling activity on site. Due to the nature of this work, there will be noise and vibration. This is expected to last until early October. You can find more information and frequently asked questions below.

When will the building works take place?
Preparatory works are taking place outside the SEE building – from September through to November 2024. The construction will run from November 2024 to December 2025, however the peak disruptive elements are limited to three months (November 2024 to January 2025).
What are you doing to reduce the impact?
We understand the work is near to other buildings and student accommodation. Please be assured we are doing everything we can to ensure noise disturbance is as minimal as possible.
We are planning construction timing, so it protects quiet times in the morning, evening and overnight. Works will take place 08:00-18:00 Monday to Friday. There will be no work on Sundays or Bank Holidays – there is a small chance work may happen on Saturdays from 09:00-14:00 but currently there are no plans in place for weekend work.
What is the building for?
The construction is for the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT), a flagship technical skills building that will benefit students across Greater Manchester. The GMIoT is led by the University of Salford, with Wigan & Leigh College as the lead further education partner.
Where can I study across campus?
While we are not anticipating too much noise disturbance, there are lots of study spaces across campus, along with quiet places to work.
Study spaces across campus can be found here: Student Spaces on Campus - Made in Salford
You can find a list of quiet spots around campus here: Campus quiet spaces and where to find them - Made in Salford
Will access to accommodation be affected?
Only access to the current GMIoT construction area will be restricted across from University House. A small number of times the road or footpath may be closed for deliveries or the moving of materials, with minimum disruption.
Will parking at campus accommodation be affected?
There will be no foreseen disruptions to accommodation parking.
Will access to Peel Park Quarter accommodation (Delaney 1, Delaney 2, Daber & Unsworth) be affected?
There should be no access restrictions to these areas. There will be times when deliveries take place which may cause short disruption.
Which blocks/rooms are closest to the construction?
Construction will be taking place near to Peel Park Quarter across from University House. Daber and Delaney 1 are the closest blocks to the construction with Delaney 2 and Unsworth set further back.
Can I move to another room?
Peel Park Quarter is very popular accommodation and fully booked so we are unable to move residents. However, we’re confident the mitigations we’ve put in place will reduce any impact on your stay.
How is biodiversity affected by the build?
In line with our sustainability objectives, it is important that the development has a positive impact (net gain) on biodiversity, compared to what was there before. An ecology survey has taken place on the site to determine the biodiversity net gain. We are pleased that this is estimated to be +25%, significantly higher than the 10% imposed by statutory planning.
Travel disruptions
Road works and closures for Salford Rise
Preparation works for Salford Rise are taking place until 26 November 2024. During this time there will be traffic restrictions and full road closures at various points on Lissadel and Scarsdale Street, plus a temporary closure of Frederick Road throughout November (diversion routes will be in place). The restrictions have been sequenced to help minimise disruption.
Full details can be found on the Salford City Council website.
Salford Crescent station third platform
Network Rail are set to build a third platform at Salford Crescent station, a key transport hub located at the heart of our Peel Park Campus. The new, extra platform will improve passenger flow and reduce train delays by allowing more flexibility for trains travelling through central Manchester and across the country. To carry out the work, Salford Crescent station will close for these weekends between March and September 2025:
- 1 – 2 March
- 8 – 9 March
- 15 – 16 March
- 22 – 23 March
- 12 -13 April
- 17 – 18 May
- 13 – 14 September
Due to the improvements, the underpass on University Road will be closed from January 2025 to November 2025.
