Adult Nursing - Why I chose to study my first year at Bury College

What made you choose to study Adult Nursing at the University of Salford, and what appealed to you about starting your first year at Bury College?

The primary reason I chose the University of Salford was their placement policy. Although I had offers from two other universities, Salford was the only one that placed students within their own postcode. As a parent, this appealed to me, as it allowed me to stay close to home for easier access to childcare arrangements.

How has studying your first year at Bury College helped in terms of saving time, money, or even just making things a bit more convenient?

Bury College is more local to me compared to Salford. I drove to Bury College, and the availability of free parking around the campus saved me both time and travel costs. It was also very convenient for me. Additionally, since the placement was near the town centre, I could run errands easily.

Do you think studying in Bury has made it easier to adjust to university life, especially if you weren’t quite ready for the full-on university experience?

Yes, because our cohort was made up of approximately 30 students, which allowed us to build close relationships with each other. Interacting with college students on campus made it easier to adjust, particularly for those who had been out of education or, like me, were mature students.

What’s the learning environment like at Bury College? Is it what you expected from a university course?

The learning environment was very good. We had access to the library and two campus sites, along with quiet areas where we could work. Since we used the same room for both lectures and seminars, it helped us settle in and build strong relationships with fellow students.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about doing Adult Nursing at Salford, especially if they’re considering starting their first year at Bury?

I would recommend choosing the Bury pathway. You build a better sense of community and relationships with your cohort since you're together for all lectures and seminars. The campus is local to many students and has great access to buses and trains, which are located right next to the campus. Additionally, the town centre and markets are close by, making it convenient to do shopping or grab lunch. For those commuting to Bury, there is free parking around the campus. The canteen also offers a variety of food options.
