Where to start
Our courses range from beginner to B1 standard as per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Where you start will depend on what experience you already have of learning your chosen language. Generally, even if you last studied the language a long time ago, you should join the Stage that matches any qualifications you have.
Stagekm | Level | Prerequisites |
---|---|---|
Stage 1 | Beginner | No previous experience or Grade D or below at GCSE (or equivalent) |
Stage 2 | Lower intermediate | A1+, Grade A*-C at GCSE (or equivalent), or a pass at Stage 1 |
Stage 3 | Intermediate | A2, Pass at AS level up to grade C (or equivalent) or a pass at Stage 2 |
Stage 4 | Upper intermediate | A2+ OR B1/UK Pass at AS level at grade A or B (or equivalent), pass at A2 level up to grade D (or equivalent), or a pass at Stage 3 |
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) can also provide guidance on what level you are currently at.
If you are unsure where you should start, we can arrange for you to discuss your experience
with one of our tutors, please email uwlp@salford.ac.uk
But don’t worry, correctly assessing your level and ensuring you are in the right class is something we’ll take care of once you start.
Our practical courses aim to increase your confidence when communicating in a social context or whilst traveling abroad.
Our lower stage courses will help you in everyday situations such as shopping, travelling and introducing yourself, together with learning the alphabet, dates, and the time of day. The higher stages aim to develop your ability to employ your language skills more widely in a professional context.
Throughout the course there will be four formative assessments (just a little test, so no pressure!) to help you evaluate your progress. Taking part in the assessment is not compulsory, however, we strongly recommend that you do. You will also be eligible for a certificate that will indicate your language level in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, internationally recognised as an assessment of language proficiency.
Start in September
Our classes run from Monday to Friday, the majority of sessions being scheduled for the early evening. Please see the application form for further information about provisional class schedules.

When on-site classes are possible, they will take place on our Peel Park campus close to Manchester city centre.
