SPD Stories, Meet Matty

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do at SPD?

I am the Graphic Designer for SPD’s Marketing Department. I design and produce all the visual elements on our social channels, courses and conferences and ensure that everything complies with the University of Salford’s brand guidelines.

Can you name your most memorable highlight at SPD?

Whilst working here I have been pushing myself to learn new skills and put them into practice whilst working on different projects. Personal highlight for me is enrolling on an Adobe After Effects video course and achieving Adobe Certified Professional status. This has opened the door to a world of opportunities in animation which I am keen to explore and expand my knowledge further in video/motion design.

Why did you choose a career in Graphic Design?

I chose this career path as I find that the creative process gives me joy, meaning and purpose. Returning to college as a mature student to retrain was the most daunting decision of my career however, I immediately knew it was the right decision for me.

What I find most rewarding part of my role is that every day I evolve and learn something new. Since it is a creative field, the ceiling of a graphic designer is limitless so long as I apply myself to learn new techniques or think differently with each project I do.

How do you achieve a good/work life balance?

The introduction of hybrid working over the last couple of years has increased my quality of work/life balance massively. The time saved from the commute gives me more time to relax and switch off in the evenings and saves more money to enjoy the weekends with friends and family.

What is one piece of advice you could give to your younger self?

To not compare yourself to others success stories. Failure and rejection is such a big part of everybody’s career, so keep pushing yourself to figure out what is best for you without falling into the trap of comparing yourself to others.
