Disability
The University of Salford is committed to delivering an accessible place to work and study for people with disabilities. We are determined to create an inclusive culture that gives everyone a chance to thrive, a culture where developing understanding and awareness around disabilities is everyone’s business. It's important to us that inequalities are called out, different life experiences are valued, and adjustments are made to ensure we are drawing from the widest talent pool. We have a changing places toilet at our Media City Campus, which can be used by anyone - colleagues, students, visitors and members of the public. Our new Science Building on our Peel Park Campus will also have a changing places toilet. Our campus is also fully mapped on Accessible which is an excellent resource outlining the accessibility of our buildings and estate.
supporting students
Disability and Learner Support work with you to ensure you have fair and equal access to your education.
Sometimes there are factors that mean you need adjustments put in place, which is why have Inclusive and Accessible teaching in place for all students. If you need additional adjustments, we create Reasonable Adjustment Plans (RAP).
If you experience a disability, long-term condition or a specific learning difficulty, then you may be entitled to appropriate academic support in your teaching and assessments. This can include extra time for assessments, extended book loans from the Library and support for field trips.
We can discuss the Inclusive and Accessible Teaching and Learning Framework with you to explore ways in which we can give support. Where you require additional support, we can create a Reasonable Adjustment Plan.
supporting colleagues
If you have a disability or long term condition we would encourage you to disclose it as doing so does bring some benefits:
- You can be supported at work better through reasonable adjustments.
- Your manager can ensure that ongoing work, activities and conversations are tailored to your needs and do not negatively impact on your professional work or health.
- Your manager can liaise with Access to Work to help with extra costs to make the necessary adjustments. You can also contact Access to Work yourself for advice
You can join our colleague network Salford Ability for support.
SalfordAbility
One of our newest groups, SalfordAbility is a colleague network dedicated to bringing together and supporting both academic and professional services staff who have a disability, chronic pain conditions and/or mental health issues. We also welcome non-disabled members as allies.
